Heh this is great, I was studying for my history exam and came upon this letter from a former slave to his former master after receiving a letter from the master asking him to come back... Good use of sarcasm in the 1860's

My personal favorite part is where he calculates exactly how much the master owes him for being a slave for 32 years....

. I served you faithfully for thirty- two years and Mandy twenty years. At $25 a month for me, and $2 a week for Mandy, our earnings would amount to $11,680. Add to this the interest for the time our wages has been kept back and deduct what you paid for our clothing and three doctor's visits to me, and pulling a tooth for Mandy, and the balance will show what we are in justice entitled to. Please send the money by Adams Express, in care of V. Winters, esq, Dayton, Ohio.

P.S. -- Say howdy to George Carter, and thank him for taking the pistol from you when you were shooting at me. I'm curious if his entire letter is meant to be spiteful and sarcastic. Or if he truly would consider going back to his old farm if the former master would pay him his lost wages.
